Sovereign Medical Secures Innovate UK Grant to Expand Spirecut’s Groundbreaking Surgical Technology

Updated: Jun 18

Sovereign Medical is proud to announce that we have been awarded a prestigious Innovate UK grant to lead a collaborative research and development project aimed at expanding the use of Spirecut’s SonoSurgery® system across new clinical indications. Working in partnership with Spirecut SA (Switzerland) and the University of Southampton, this award marks a major milestone in Sovereign’s mission to deliver transformative, minimally invasive surgical solutions to the NHS and beyond.

What is Spirecut?

Spirecut is a Swiss innovation in precision soft tissue surgery, using patented Sono-Instruments® — scalpel-like tools designed to perform percutaneous procedures under ultrasound guidance. With no incision, no stitches, and a 10-minute outpatient procedure time, Spirecut enables safe, efficient treatment for conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome and trigger finger. The technology significantly reduces downtime for patients and can be performed outside of the main operating theatre, helping to relieve pressure on NHS services.

Sovereign’s Role: Scaling Innovation Across the UK

As the exclusive UK distributor, Sovereign Medical will lead the UK end of the project, recruiting a joint UK–Swiss advisory group of orthopaedic surgeons, hand specialists, and interventional radiologists. We will coordinate national training programmes, cadaveric labs, and clinical workshops — ensuring UK clinicians are equipped to evaluate and adopt the Spirecut technique. We’ll also deliver a Delphi consensus exercise to define clinical pathways and collect expert feedback on extending the technology to nine new indications.

Expanding the Indications

The Innovate UK grant supports work to explore Spirecut’s potential beyond carpal tunnel and trigger finger. Sovereign and partners will evaluate its use in:

  • Dupuytren’s contracture

  • De Quervain’s tenosynovitis

  • Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)

  • Cubital tunnel syndrome

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Morton’s neuroma

  • Ganglion cysts

    and more.

This expansion could significantly improve access to treatment for common conditions while reducing surgical backlog and cost.

Health Economic Leadership from Southampton

Our academic partner, the University of Southampton, will develop an early-stage health technology assessment (HTA) model, estimating the cost-effectiveness and NHS budget impact of expanding Spirecut's use. This research will form the basis for a future application to NICE, aiming for a formal recommendation for NHS adoption — a major step toward national rollout.

A Win for Innovation, Clinicians, and the NHS

At a time when surgical backlogs remain a major pressure point, Spirecut offers a smarter, faster alternative for common procedures. By leading this project, Sovereign Medical is not only distributing a revolutionary device — we are actively shaping its clinical pathway, evidence base, and UK adoption strategy.

We are excited to play a central role in bringing this technology to more patients and building long-term solutions that improve outcomes and ease NHS burden.
