Applications of Maia™
The MAÏA™ prosthesis is primarily used to treat advanced thumb osteoarthritis, particularly in patients who have not responded to conservative treatments such as splinting, corticosteroid injections, or physical therapy. By replacing the damaged carpometacarpal joint, the implant alleviates pain and restores function.
Traditional treatment for severe thumb arthritis often involves trapeziectomy, the surgical removal of the trapezium bone. While effective, this procedure can lead to joint instability and reduced grip strength. The MAÏA™ prosthesis provides a more stable and functional alternative, maintaining joint integrity and enhancing thumb mobility.
Patients who have experienced previous injuries to the CMC joint, such as fractures or ligament damage, may develop post-traumatic arthritis. The MAÏA™ prosthesis helps restore joint stability and function in these cases, preventing further degeneration.
In addition to osteoarthritis, MAÏA™ can be used for patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis affecting the CMC joint, as well as congenital or degenerative joint disorders that impair thumb movement and cause chronic pain.

Technical Specifications
The MAÏA™ Carpometacarpal Joint (CMCJ) replacement prosthesis features a dual-mobility design that enhances stability and minimizes the risk of dislocation. Its hemispherical trapezium cup comes in three sizes—8mm, 9mm, and 10mm—each equipped with four anti-rotation spikes to ensure strong primary stability. The implant utilizes polyethylene inserts that provide a smooth articulation while maintaining a full range of motion without compromising joint integrity.
To accommodate different anatomical variations, the prosthesis includes modular necks in three offset sizes, allowing surgeons to fine-tune thumb length and soft tissue tension. Additionally, the prosthesis offers seven anatomical stem sizes designed for cementless fixation, promoting optimal bone ingrowth and long-term secondary stability. These combined features make MAÏA™ an advanced solution for patients requiring thumb joint replacement due to osteoarthritis or other degenerative conditions.
