OsteoFab®
Joint Infection & Revision Surgery
Non-Metallic Innovation for Complex Reconstruction
A New Material Standard for Infected and Difficult Joint Revisions
Managing periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) and complex revision arthroplasty presents significant clinical challenges — from eradicating infection to reconstructing compromised bone. Traditional metal implants may exacerbate risk due to biofilm formation, imaging artefacts, and immune response.
OsteoFab® (PEKK), developed by Oxford Performance Materials, offers a metal-free, patient-specific solution for these difficult cases. Manufactured via high-precision 3D printing, PEKK implants combine biocompatibility, mechanical strength, and radiolucency — making them ideally suited for use in infected and high-risk joint revision procedures.

Clinical Applications
Bioinert & Infection-Resistant
PEKK does not corrode, does not support biofilm adhesion like metal, and is inert in infected or inflamed tissue environments.
Metal-Free Design
Ideal for patients with metal sensitivity, multiple prior revisions, or active infection, where reimplanting metal may increase complication risk.
Radiolucent for Post-Op Monitoring
Enables clear follow-up imaging (X-ray, CT, MRI) without metal artefact — critical in tracking infection resolution or bone regeneration.
Patient-Specific Reconstruction
Custom implants can be designed to fill major bone loss, match complex anatomy, and restore joint function — tailored to each surgical plan.
Strong, Lightweight, Durable
PEKK matches the mechanical behaviour of bone, with high fatigue strength, excellent wear resistance, and long-term biostability.

Infection Resistance by Design: The Bacteriostatic Advantage of PEKK
One of the most significant advantages of OsteoFab® (PEKK) in joint revision and infection cases lies in its intrinsic resistance to bacterial colonisation. Unlike metals or standard polymers, PEKK has a unique surface energy that closely resembles naturally occurring antimicrobial proteins such as casein, mucin, and lubricin. This biomimetic surface chemistry encourages the adsorption of these protective proteins, creating a biological interface that actively resists bacterial adhesion.
Rather than relying on coatings or antibiotic additives, OsteoFab® achieves this effect through its base material properties. Studies have shown that PEKK significantly reduces the attachment and proliferation of clinically relevant pathogens, including MRSA. These bacteriostatic properties make PEKK an ideal choice in high-risk environments where periprosthetic joint infection is a concern, especially during reimplantation following a two-stage revision or in patients with compromised immunity.
This reduced bacterial affinity is paired with enhanced compatibility for host cells, allowing for safe integration into the surgical site while minimising the risk of reinfection. By combining mechanical strength, osteoconductivity, and innate bacteriostatic behaviour, OsteoFab® (PEKK) offers a truly next-generation option for managing complex joint reconstructions in infected or infection-prone settings.
Clinical Indications
OsteoFab® is used in a growing number of surgical specialties and anatomical sites. Click to explore how OsteoFab® is transforming care across each indication:
Definitive PEKK implants after infection clearance — avoiding metal reimplantation.
Custom-designed implants are used for skull, faIn patients unsuitable for standard implants, PEKK can be designed as a custom hemi-arthroplasty, spacer, or structural defect fill.cial, and jaw reconstructions, improving both function and aesthetics.
Non-metallic reconstruction in biologically hostile or irradiated fields.
PEKK offers a safe, durable option where long-term immune and imaging compatibility is essential.
